I dreamed of starting a blog for years before I took the plunge. I love blogging and all that it has to offer.
Blogging is not only a creative outlet for me but also gives me the opportunity to serve others.
Blogging enables me to use my skills and talents to help women like you manage their time, homes, and families well without ever leaving my house.
If you think you might be ready to start a blog of your own, keep reading. I’m going to show you how to start a blog in 15 minutes or less.
Before you set up your blog, decide what you will write about and brainstorm a list of possible names for your website.
Once you pick out a name for your blog, this will become your URL.
I used GoDaddy’s website search tool to determine if the name I chose for my blog was available as a URL.
After I found a domain name that was available, I purchased it through Bluehost, the company I chose to host my new site.
I recommend setting up self-hosted WordPress site if you intend to make money from your blog.
There are free platforms out there that can be used to start a blog, but many of these platforms limit your options to monetize.
Also, if you start a blog on a free platform and later decide that you would like to implement a monetization strategy the transfer process can be tedious.
If you have any intention of monetizing your blog now or in the future, it is best to start with a self-hosted WordPress site from the beginning.
Bluehost offers a basic hosting plan that is perfect for beginner bloggers at less than $5 per month.
With the basic plan you get:
- One FREE domain
- One-click WordPress installation
- 24/7 support
- Money-back guarantee
Once your blog begins to grow, you may need to upgrade your hosting, but the basic plan from Bluehost is a great place to start.
If you sign up and decide blogging isn’t for you, you have 30 days to get your money back.
How to start a blog in 15 minutes or less
Click here to open Bluehost in a new window and follow the instructions below to get your new blog up and running in 15 minutes or less.
1 // Select your plan
The Basic Plan is perfect for bloggers who are just getting started.
You may need to upgrade as you grow your readership, but this plan will work well for you for quite some time.
The Basic Plan is also the most cost-effective. Be sure to select the 3-year plan to get the best price.
*NOTE – When I signed up The Basic Plan came with the option to add on privacy protection for my domain, keeping my personal information private. Unless you have a business address you will use to register your domain, you may choose to select The Plus Plan in order to have the option to add domain privacy protection. This feature comes free with The Prime Plan. If privacy is a concern for you, it might be worth it to consider a plan that comes with that option. The pricing is still competitive, and you may just catch them during a sale!
2 // Register your domain
You do have the option to register an existing domain on Bluehost, but you get one free domain when you sign up for hosting.
I chose to register my domain directly with Bluehost to avoid any extra charges or unnecessary steps.
3 // Enter your account information
Once you have registered your domain, Bluehost will ask for your name, address, phone number, and email address.
You will also confirm the selection of your plan and any add-ons. As mentioned earlier, I only chose to add domain privacy protection.
The next screen will ask for your billing information. Bluehost bills upfront in 1, 2, 3 or 5-year increments.
The 3-year plan will get you the best pricing. Remember, you have 30 days to get your money back if you decide not to continue blogging.
Next, you will be asked to select a password. This is the password you will use to log in once your account is all set up.
You can skip any upgrades or special offers.
4 // Get started with WordPress
Once you’ve created a password, you will come to a screen that allows you to log in to your account. Press the blue login button.
The next screen will give you the option to pick a free theme. Skip this step.
There are so many affordable theme options out there that will allow you to choose a design that fits the aesthetic you are going for and will look much more professional.
Click “Start Building” to get into the back end of your WordPress site.
Begin to familiarize yourself with your WordPress Dashboard.
Skip the blue buttons in the middle and focus on the menu on the left-hand side of your screen.
This is where you will go to create and publish new posts, upload images, and install any widgets you may choose to use along the way.
5 // Design your blog
Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of your very own self-hosted WordPress site. Next, you will want to choose a theme for your blog.
I love Restored316, which is where I chose the theme for my site.
Choose a design that fits your personality, but is also easy to read and navigate.
Most themes you purchase will come with step-by-step installation instructions that you can work through on your own.
After you get your site looking exactly the way you want it, you can begin creating content and plan the launch of your new blog.
Now, it’s your turn
As you can see, starting a blog is easy and affordable with Bluehost.
If you have ever dreamed of becoming a blogger, now is the time.
For 15 minutes of your time and less than $5 dollars per month, you can start a blog that has the potential to bless you and bless others.
